The Sibrik Castle

A short walk from the Mill Croft, the one-storey Renaissance castle was originally built as a hunting lodge for King Matthias in the 1470s, and allegedly it was the king himself who gave it to the Sibrik family. A more detailed history of the castle is available here.

The Riding Stables

The stables, still in use today, were originally a part of the estate of the Sibrik Castle. We often organize riding tours and riding camps for children in cooperation with the management of the riding stables. If you would like to discover the neighbourhood on horseback, you can find further details here.

Mill Exhibition

You can learn about the traditional milling process in a mill on a Vas county estate, and also the plans and old documents of the upper mill in Bozsok are on display. You can learn about the Bánki-turbine, and other interesting facts about the mill of the Steindl family, which is now the main building of the Mill Croft.

Spring

The spring, with fresh, drinking water, is on the plot of the Mill Croft, but it is accessible to everyone. The surroundings of the spring water outlet pipe were nicely rebuilt during the renovation of the mill: there is a millstone around the pipe; the water flows to the bottom of a grindstone and then further to the Bozsok stream.

Although it is not indicated on maps, more and more people know about it. Many people stop here for a rest, to play in the stream or fill their water bottles.

Saint Anna Church

The church, with a history going back to the Middle Ages, was consecrated by Bishop István Sennyei in 1630. The Catholic church by the stream has been rebuilt several times since then. It is related to the most important festival of the village, the one commemorating Saint Anna, the patron saint of the village (on 26 July).

Mass: on Sundays and holidays

The Ruins of the Monastery

The ruins of a tower, on the east side of the stream, near Saint Anna Church are from the 15-16th century. Most probably it belonged to a monastery, however its history is not yet fully explored. The part of a crenellated wall is likely to be the remaining northwest corner of an old castellum.

Kneipp Yard

The Kneipp yard in Bozsok was established by the Castanea Association, in the community health centre: it is well known for its gentle yet effective methods for preserving health. The circulation in the foot can be stimulated with the dry tread path, covered with different materials, of various shape and size.

Wine House

The kitchen and the ‘best room’ of the house at 133 Rákóczi street, built in 1819, was renovated and now displays the treasures of local viticulture. At harvest, in autumn, there is a fair on its yard, with a wide range of handcrafted products.

Saint Joseph Chapel

Records mention the chapel at the end of the village as early as 1689. The present single-nave building was erected in 1775. A Rococo main altar and a repainted altarpiece are in the chapel, where masses are no longer held.

The Ruins of the Batthyány Castle

Ferenc Batthyány owned the castle from 1616 and had it converted into a magnificent, aristocratic two-storey castle with four corner towers. The history of the building is full of twists and turns; during Rákóczi’s war of independence it served as the headquarters for the imperial and later for the kuruc (Hungarian) army.

In August 1841 the castle was struck by lightning, got on fire, and suffered considerable damage. After being neglected for decades, some exploration and preservation work started last year to make the ruins visible. Hopefully the ruins of the building, once larger than the Sibrik Castle, will soon be open for visitors and Bozsok will have another sight to see.

Cák

Cák, a village 6 km from Bozsok with a population of 270, is well-known for the row of wine cellars: the distinctive wine-press buildings with thatched roofs were built at the beginning of the 19th century. Grapes used to be pressed and processed here, and wine and fruit used to be stored in these small buildings.

Velem

One of the last operating water mills in Hungary is in Velem, 5 km from Bozsok. The old mill, pulled down in 1913, had log walls, a thatched roof and two water wheels. The building as you see it today was constructed in 1919. Unfortunately it is not in operation now, but hopefully it will open again soon, as a museum.

The Saint Vid chapel on the nearby hill was built at the end of the 17th century. The white building with a spire among the trees, is still in use today, and is regularly visited by churchgoers, pilgrims and tourists.

Velem has many other sights and programs to offer, find out about them here.

With so many sights, it’s nice to wander around aimlessly on the squares and streets of the old town. It is a great destination for those travelling with kids, as there are many sights and museums they can enjoy. Kőszeg is one of the few places in Hungary where you can still see trust-system stands: local people are not worried to put their products in front of their houses on a small stand, trusting the honesty of their customers.
